The NPD Group has come with a monthly report summarizing financing in the video game industry during the last month. Summarized in one sentence, November was financially successful, topped by Call of Duty: WWII from Sledgehammer Games in software section and in hardware section, all the platforms can be happy with their sales. But let’s take a closer look at the report.
Regarding hardware components, both Sony and Microsoft reached top rank in one chart. While PlayStation 4 is the most successful in terms of units sold in November, Microsoft recorded the highest amount of money received from customers mainly thanks to the release of more expensive Xbox One X.
The Switch console is not mentioned this time because it was overthrown from the leading position by PS4 but the sales of Switch are still great. Sony can be also happy that it shifted the highest number of consoles to markets since it started with PS4 distribution (mainly thanks to the Black Friday event). At the same time, PlayStation 4 is the best seller platform of this year and seems that it will keep the leading position for the rest of the year.
Looking at software sales, Activision (as every year) can be satisfied with a new episode of Call of Duty because it has immediately become the best seller game of the year and it has beaten all the games released during this year. This makes Call of Duty series the most successful series in the whole history of NPD reports.
The second place in the chart belongs to Star Wars: Battlefront 2 so it seems that the whole affair with lootboxes and gambling did not affect the game at all and the sales are still very high. Assassin’s Creed: Origins reached the third position and NPD says that it has the highest sales since 2013 when Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was released. Thus, it is now clear that the series is fully back at least for one year. The whole list of sales and charts can be seen at the end of the article.
Generally, it can be also summarized that sales of all the companies are rather increasing compared to the last year (by 30 % in average). This might be bad news for our wallets but it is definitely beneficial for video game industry because it is clear that it is still expanding and we can expect a lot of high quality games in the future.
